Chiropractic has a very long history dating back
to 1895 when the first official manipulation/adjustment was given. Since its
inception, Chiropractic has risen to become the third most used primary health
care profession in the world after medicine and dentistry.
Chiropractors are primarily concerned with the
diagnosis, treatment and management of neuromusculoskeletal conditions such as;
back pain, neck pain, headaches, jaw pain, arthritis, sports injuries, stiff
joints or muscle spasms; or any other joint or muscular condition of the
shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee or foot.
In South Africa, education and training to
become a chiropractor is spread over 6 years, after which a Masters Degree in
Chiropractic is awarded.
What does a Chiropractor do?
Firstly, your chiropractor will take a comprehensive case history about your condition, followed by a physical examination, neurological tests, orthopaedic tests, as well as special joint motion tests. These tests help the chiropractor determine exactly where and what the cause of your problem is.
Chiropractic treatment is effective for the whole family, including children, pregnant woman, sportspeople and senior citizens. Treatment consists of specific and highly specialized manipulative techniques (adjustments), to functionally restricted areas of the spine or affected joints. Patients will often experience rapid relief as the joint motion is restored. Treatment also includes soft tissue techniques, massage, stretching techniques, ice, heat, dry needling, and may also include other modalities like infrared, ultrasound and IFC. Your chiropractor will also teach the importance of correct eating, exercises and a healthy mental outlook
